1 Year On: The 10 Best Films I’ve Watched

A lot has happened in the space of a year; box office records have been broken again and again, all BACK TO THE FUTURE films are now set in the past and film reboots/remakes pretty much shape the film industry. However, today also marks 1 year since the start of Real-Time Write-Ups. One year ago today, I sat in my room with a notepad and a pen to watch an unseen film of my favourite actor Mr. Denzel Washington, and I was shocked by what I saw… I actually disliked one of his films!

After the INSIDE MAN (2006) review, my first cinema review would come in the form of the brilliant NIGHTCRAWLER (2014). After these, I became hooked on writing about films and sharing my feelings about them with my friends and followers.

109 Posts, 6,930 Tweets and 1,504 Followers later, Real-Time Write-Ups is now posting weekly reviews, news and articles, writing for the blogs Screen Relish and Film Debate, promoting independent and short films, being approached directly by directors for reviews, attending press screenings (on behalf of Screen Relish) and  hosting the popular daily game #Own1Rent1Chuck1 on both Twitter and Facebook.

In this article we take a look back at the films which we have watched and reviewed in the past year (New and Old) and narrow them down to a personal TOP 10, ranking them from worst to best.

Please note that there are many good/great films that JUST missed out on this list due to similar rankings or simply because I have not seen them yet! – It was a tough and tiresome process narrowing this down to just 10!

Here we go…

#10 – Jurassic World (2015) – Rated 8.5 out of 10.0

#10 Jurassic World

Purely because of its childhood connection I had to put this in ahead of the other 8.5ers!

#9 – No Escape (2015) – Rated 8.5 out of 10.0

No Escape_Main

I hadn’t felt this tense and frightened in the cinema since watching CAPTAIN PHILLIPS over a year before.

#8 – Southpaw (2015) – Rated 8.5 out of 10.0

#8 Southpaw

The grit and emotion of THE FIGHTER (2010) mixed with the showmanship of the ROCKY films.

#7 – Ant-Man (2015) – Rated 8.6 out of 10.0

#7 Ant-Man

Much like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY in 2014, this film was the surprise of the year for me! I went in expecting poor or at least average things, and came away ranking it as one of the best MCU movies to date! BRING ON CIVIL WAR!

#6 – Big Hero 6 (2015/UK) – Rated 8.6 out of 10.0

Funnily enough the team of 6 unconventional heroes comes in at number 6 on this #Top10 list! It was a huge surprise once again and easily one of my favourite Disney pieces of work.

#5 – Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) – Rated 8.7 out of 10.0

For somebody who was absolutely clueless about Mad Max before seeing this film, it shows how great this film truly is as even just a stand-alone film. It was also my first ever press screening that I attended for Screen Relish, so it holds quite an important place in my year of writing.

#4 – The Prestige (2006) – Rated 8.8 out of 10.0

(L-R) Anthony DeMarco, Christian Bale

Personally, it is shameful that it has taken me almost 10 years to watch this brilliantly produced Christopher Nolan film, but fortunately it is now set to be one of my favourite all-time films.

#3 – Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) – Rated 9.0 out of 10.0

To this day I still receive a lot of stick for rating this film so highly for the many reasons that exist out there among critics; however I stick by the fact that this is a brilliant extension of the MCU franchise, and personally only just surpasses the first film from 2012 in terms of its greatness. As a huge Marvel fan, this was always going to be one of my favourites of the year, and I am sorry haters but it still is!

#2 – Trumbo (2016/UK) – Rated 9.0 out of 10.0

#2 Trumbo

Not yet published on Real-Time Write-Ups, TRUMBO was without doubt the highlight of my 1st ever BFI Film Festival experience this year when I wrote for Screen Relish. It is a spectacular story which any of us film fanatics or ‘buffs’ should be ashamed to not know more about going into it. It is the perfect blend of drama and comedy, and personally only one film has topped it for me this year.

#1 –Whiplash (2015/UK) – Rated 9.0 out of 10.0

#1 Whiplash

“It’s a film about a drummer and his teacher” – How can this possibly be one of the best films of the last 2 years and maybe even the decade I hear you ask? Well, it just is!

Not many films can match the intensity of this film or the performances from its lead and supporting cast. If you haven’t seen it already, WHIPLASH is one film which will leave you drained (in a good way) after you have watched it.

As close to 5 ★ as I am prepared to give to a film over this past year.

I have had a lot of fun this past year, been given some great opportunities, met some great people, and created a game I hope that all of you enjoy in your spare time.

Thank you all for your support (I am sure I don’t say it enough) and here is to the next year of Real-Time Write-Ups!
